What Your Sleep Talking is Trying to Tell You

by Cathy Carr

If you share a room or a bed with someone, you may think it’s cute if they talk in their sleep from time to time. But, while sleep talking is sometimes adorable (but usually pretty creepy), there is a deeper, underlying meaning that is important for you to realize. The symptoms of sleep talking aren’t brought on by silly, tiny elves that push the right buttons in your brain to make you speak. No – if you start experiencing sleep talking it’s probably happening because you are stressed, depressed, or sleep deprived.

Every once in a while it’s OK to say a few things in your sleep, but if this is a common occurrence, it’s a good idea to figure out what’s going on in order to fix the issue. It could be something worrisome going on in your life, or it could even be problems with your mattress making your sleep life a nightmare. Either way, here’s what you can do to help limit your sleep talking in the future.

1.       Create a Nightly Routine

Every night before you go to bed, it’s generally a good idea to follow a nightly routine that will help your body understand it’s time to settle down and go to sleep. When you do the same thing every night, your body starts realizing your day is winding down and will also begin to wind down, making the actual falling asleep part rather easy. Without a nighttime routine, your body and mind will have a harder time resting right away.

You can create a nighttime routine by taking a bath and lighting candles every night. Another way could be by reading a little bit of your book before jumping into bed. You could even take the dog on a calming walk before snuggling into the blankets. Whatever you do, make sure it’s peaceful so you have a better chance at quickly falling into a deep slumber.

2.       Tackle Stress ASAP

If works got you down or your nerves are going haywire because of an upcoming event, it won’t be a surprise that you’re talking in your sleep. Get your life back on track by figuring out what is stressing you out and coming up with a solution to make it easier for you. Meditation, yoga, and other exercises can increase your endorphins, which make you happy. The faster you can calm your stress, the better it will be for you to sleep throughout the night without a peep. Try these simple practices to help eliminate or at least reduce work stress in your life.

3.       Get a New Mattress

Sleep deprivation from an uncomfortable mattress is the worst and the only way to fix a bad mattress is by getting a new one. You need a bed that will conform to your body’s curves, while still giving it the support it wants and needs. The sooner you get a shiny new bed, the sooner you’ll get a better night’s rest. If you happen to be talking in your sleep, changing up your mattress can fix the problem so instead of speaking gibberish, you’re quietly sending zzz’s into the air.

Don’t be fooled by the myth that sleep talking is just a funny thing that happens sometimes when you sleep. It can be a serious problem that needs your attention.
